Perform general tasks needed for animal care. Veterinary assistants work under the guidance of veterinarians and technicians to clean kennels and examination rooms as well as provide direct animal care through feeding, bathing, and exercising. They may aid in blood, urine, and tissue sample collections, as well as administer medication and/or vaccinations ordered by the veterinarian.
Veterinary assistants also support veterinarians during surgical procedures by sterilizing instruments and passing tools when asked. Therefore, they should be comfortable with the sight of blood and other bodily fluids. After surgery, they monitor animals’ condition and behavior for signs of improvement or complications.
