Northcentral Technical College

For ninety years, Northcentral Technical College has provided relevant occupational training to people from all over north central Wisconsin and beyond. Begun in 1912 in a small two-story building and called the Wausau Industrial School, the college grew rapidly in response to an evolving technology that triggered the need for expanded services. Today, the NTC district, one of 16 districts in Wisconsin, covers all or portions of 10 counties including Marathon, Lincoln, Taylor, Price, Langlade, Menominee, Clark, Portage, Shawano, and Waupaca. In the heart of the district is NTC’s Central Campus – Wausau. This modern campus is home to some unique programs, including Educational Interpreter Technician and Visually Impaired and Deaf and Hard of Hearing programs. The Central Campus – Wausau is supported by regional campuses in Antigo, Medford, Phillips, Wittenberg, and Spencer, where students can complete a number of career programs and take classes to help fulfill requirements of programs offered at Wausau. The college has some 2,450 full-time equivalent students, though nearly 18,000 people take at least one class annually. NTC has made a commitment to serve all residents in its expansive service area. To that end, it has built a sophisticated interactive television system (ITV), which provides live give-and-take between the instructor and students at various campuses. ITV supports other alternative learning approaches at the college, including flexible, self-paced learning labs and courses by videotape. At NTC, we offer career preparation in some of the fastest-growing fields in the U.S. today. Students can choose from more than 40 one- and two-year programs and be virtually assured of a job when they graduate. A recent graduate follow-up conducted by the college showed that 96 percent of NTC graduates had found employment within six months after graduating. Business and industry turn to NTC for customized training and technical assistance. The college offers a wide range of services, including tailor-made classes, testing and evaluation, and consulting services. The curriculum here is continually monitored by some 45 advisory committees with representatives from business and industry. They ensure that our programs are up to date and meet the needs of employers today, tomorrow, and beyond.
