ACT is non-profit veterinary care organization with a mission to reduce pet overpopulation, ending euthanasia as a means to population control and helping our community, by making veterinary care affordable and accessible for EVERYONE!
Our first service event as the incorporated Animal Coalition of Tampa (ACT) was on January 13, 2002. A one day event which we later started to provide to the community once a month and we aptly named "SpayDay". On our very 1st "Spay Day" we sterilized 32 feral cats which were trapped and returned to their communities by their caretakers .
From Jan 2002 to Feb 2005, ACT provided low cost surgeries for community cats by networking with local veterinarians who allowed us to borrow their brick and mortar clinics one Sunday per month as we continued our Community Assistance Program called "Spay Day". All surgical supplies were provided by Big Cat Rescue.
On March 13 of 2006, we opened our first Clinic and we kept growing by an average of 30% a year. By March 25 of 2011, we celebrated our 50,000th dog/cat sterilization surgery!
By August 2011, ACT moved to a 10,000 sq. ft. building where we were able to not only continue offering sterilization for pets and community cats but also added special surgeries to our affordable services. Unfortunately, in 2014, Arson fire destroyed the clinic and killed our 3 beloved clinic cats. With public support ACT was relocated and reopened in 5 weeks after returning to our original clinic on Lemon Street. In Jan of 2016 we celebrated our 100,000th dog/cat sterilization surgery.
In 2019 we were able to purchase our own building and moved our clinic to our current location at 8501 Ladue Lane in Tampa. 2020 COVID-19 hit us hard and we had to temporarily close due to the pandemic. We are currently working on strategic plan goals, which include improved fundraising capacities, business sponsorship programs, a community ambassador program, building improvement, and overall organization development.
Inaccessibility of veterinary care has deep and tangled roots in social problems like poverty, racism, and economic inequality. But we are here to change that! Animal Coalition of Tampa’s purpose is to serve and transform our community so no one ever has to forgo veterinary care for their pets because the cost is out of reach. Join our team and become an invaluable partner to inspire, empower, and educate others to change our community!
