ANIMAL CARE TECHNICIAN II Posting Number: SRGV8977 Number of Vacancies: 1 Location: Brownsville, Texas Department: College of Sciences/ Human Genetics & STDOI FLSA: Non-Exempt Scope of Job: Performs moderately complex work in the handling, care, and treatment of animals used in experiments, and of animals maintained in breeding colonies that produce animals for use in experiments. Description of Duties: Provides routine care of animals including feeding, and cleaning and sanitizing cages and environmental enrichment devices. Assists in maintaining animal care and procedure facilities and equipment. Maintains records of the daily census of animal colonies and of diets, life history events, genealogy, weights, and health status of individual animals, Follows special instructions for the care and experimental manipulation of laboratory animals, including instructions pertaining to prescribed preventive and therapeutic treatment procedures. May administer special diets and medicines to animals. May prepare animals for, and assists in conducting, experimental and clinical procedures, including blood sampling and surgery. May perform post-operative care of animals, including administration of drugs, removal of sutures, and dressing of wounds. May record and organize clinical data and assists with data analyses and preparation of reports. Provides shadow-training to assigned staff. Performs other duties as assigned. Supervision Received: Specific supervision from assigned supervisor. Supervision Given: Direct supervision of assigned staff. Required Education: High School diploma or GED. Licenses/Certifications: Preferred: As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).Based on area of assignment may be required to obtain Assistant Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) within 1 year of hire. Required Experience: Two (2) years of related experience, or An associate's degree in veterinary technology or a closely related field, or Bachelor's degree in a biological science or a closely related field from an accredited University. Preferred Experience: None. Equipment: Use of standard office equipment. Working Conditions: Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Frequent travel and weekend work is required. Standard laboratory setting, exposure to bio-hazardous material, extreme temperatures, odors, noise, vibration, allergens and humidity. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and will include the use of personal protective equipment. Working conditions are an indoor and outdoor environment with exposure to temperature variations, infectious diseases, and animals. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds while performing duties in the animal care facility.
