Summary:A Kennel Technician is usually an associate degree holder in veterinary studies or having taken classes in animal science; these qualifications area a plus. A Kennel Technician our establishment mostly works in the kennel area and some of the time in the treatment area and may involve anything from basic tasks such as feeding, to more complicated ones such as administering basic treatment to animals.
Duties:The Kennel Technician's duties include feeding, providing water for, and cleaning up after animals, cleaning out kennels, walking and grooming animals, sometimes giving animal medications by pill, and recording information about animals, such as breed, weight, height, medications or vaccinations they have received or past illnesses, and the animals general behavior.
Education and Training Requirements:To be a Kennel Technician, one must have at least a High School Diploma, although vocational training or other related course work are a plus as mentioned before. There are undergraduate programs available, which are associated wit non-farm animal care taking, and animal science courses or technician certifications in animal care are a plus to being hired as a Kennel Technician.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:A good Kennel Technician must be able to actively listen to what other people are saying; have good time management and communication skills; is socially perceptive; coordinated; and is good at understanding instructions, making judgments and decisions. Knowledge in customer and personal service, English and Spanish language, administration and management, public safety and security, biology, clerical, and education and training would also be helpful.
Working Conditions:The work involves a lot of walking and lifting. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, and may require coming in on weekends and holidays. The work place is also often noisy because of the number of animals present, and the odor of animal feces may be present. Some travel may be necessary for acquiring medicine in an emergency case scenario; as well as being on time is always expected. For this reason reliable transportation is required.
