  • Works to ensure the best possible environment and outcomes for shelter animals.
  • Performs high volume spay/neuter surgeries on the shelter animal population.
  • Evaluates the health of the shelter population in general and determines appropriate actions and resolution of health issues.
  • Provides medical evaluation and diagnosis of illnesses or injuries of the animals in the shelter.
  • Performs rabies vaccination of shelter animals; Prescribes medications and treatments as budget and/or donations allow.
  • Performs euthanasia when necessary and assists shelter management in determining need for euthanasia.
  • Updates medical records of animals in the shelter, including diagnoses and treatment, vaccines given and surgery performed.
  • Maintains drug-use logs and assist staff in developing and implementing certain medical-related policies and procedures to veterinary and sheltering practice standards.
  • Provides clinical supervision to technicians assisting with surgery.
  • Promotes responsible pet ownership by answering questions from potential adopters and the public regarding animal health and behavior.
  • Assists in the development and/or review of sanitation, treatment and euthanasia protocols.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures and other companion animal health issues.
  • Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited school of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Current license to practice in Texas. Have or ability to obtain USDA certification for interstate Health Certificates.
  • 4 years experience working in animal medical environment.
  • Strong supervisory and management skills.
  • Strong computer and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, employees, and elected officials.
  • Must be available for on-call schedule and irregular hours as needed.

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $129,854.40 - $162,323.20 annually based on qualifications
