Overview

The Animal Care Services Investigator is responsible for the investigation of animal cruelty complaints from neglect, animal hoarding, misdemeanor, and felony level offenses. This position is responsible for the enforcement of City ordinances and State laws concerning cruelty of animals and other criminal activities related to Animal Care Services as well as animal bite investigations and facilitation of quarantine for biting animals.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to calls for service concerning animals domestic and wildlife
  • Patrol the city enforcing ordinances, issuing warnings and or citations
  • Capture and transport animals including but not limited to those that are stray, sick, injured or potentially dangerous
  • Write detailed report of actions taken on each call worked and input information into Chameleon
  • Responsible for calls of service and complaints of Animal Cruelty for the city of Corpus Christi
  • Enforce Chapter 6 Ordinances and State Law concerning the treatment of animals and possible acts of animal cruelty
  • Investigate reports of unsuitable living conditions and investigates calls ranging from neglect to critical/criminal cruelty offenses
  • Initiate investigation into incident involving a dog that meets the definition of an Aggressive Dog as outline in Chapter 6 Ordinances
  • Take reports and enter documentation into the ACS Chameleon system
  • Present findings to the Program Manager for consideration and recommendation to either deem a dog Level 1 or 2 Aggressive or Not Aggressive
  • Pursue all cases of Serious Bodily Injury attacks from dogs in accordance with Texas Health and Safety Code 822
  • Work with Law Enforcement when there is an Attack By Dog in the City in accordance with Texas Health and Safety Code 822
  • Conduct interviews with victim(s), dog owner and witnesses to establish facts of case
  • Daily interaction with customers who are reclaiming animals, adopting, rescuing or obtaining information
  • Must have excellent customer service; interacts with families with small children
  • Ability to handle complaints or irate customers in person or via phone and resolve issues effectively
  • Assist customers with meet and greets, background check in database, adoption
  • Must have knowledge of local City Ordinances and where to locate them; Adoption Processes and Standard of Care for Animals
  • Document animal vs animal, and attack only reports
  • Perform other related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

  • Non-Exempt - Full-Time
  • Non-rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday 8:00am-5:00pm
  • Must be available to work additional hours as needed
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
  • In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Two (2) years of experience

Licenses and Certifications

Required

  • A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Required Within Twelve (12) Months of Hire

  • Euthanasia certification
  • Dangerous Dog certification
  • National Cruelty Investigation Level 1 certification
  • ACO Basic certification

Employment is contingent on passing any post-offer pre-employment screening as listed below:

  • Criminal Background Check: Yes
  • Motor Vehicle Record Check: Yes
  • Drug Screening: Yes
  • Physical Exam: Yes

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
