The Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) department at the Animal Medical Center (AMC) is now interviewing for an internship-trained emergency doctor OR boarded/board-eligible criticalist position open immediately until the position has been filled.
Our department is comprised of 7 criticalists, 4 internship-trained emergency doctors, 6 residents, a specialty intern, and 30 licensed ECC technicians. Additionally, the AMC houses staff veterinarians boarded in Anesthesia, Cardiology, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Clinical Pathology, Anatomic Pathology, Diagnostic Imaging, Radiation Oncology and Dentistry. The close interaction among these various services creates an atmosphere of dynamic clinical training and experience. Clinical support services including imaging and clinical pathology are available throughout the week and the hospital offers advanced procedures through the interventional radiology service and both intermittent and continuous hemodialysis.
Our emergency room (ER) is at the hospital’s center, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and has an active caseload of over 14,000 visits per year. The emergency room staff doctors and criticalists play a paramount and integral role in our department. The role of emergency room doctors includes primary receiving of emergent pets presenting to the ER, oversight of the interns rotating through the emergency service, ECC resident training in ER, and care of all pets hospitalized in the ER and ICU when on overnight duty. Doctors rotate through daytime, urgent care, swing and (for some of our staff) overnight shifts.
The staff ER job is demanding but extremely gratifying. Efficiency, diplomacy, patience, and confidence are essential character traits for our doctors, as are both a desire to teach and to be taught. We encourage our doctors to participate in both internal and external continuing education opportunities and to stay apprised of current literature as it applies to ECC.
The AMC provides health and professional liability insurance. Completion of a small animal rotating internship, and current New York State licensure are required.
