Austin Animal Services Center is a no kill shelter saving 99% of the pets who come through our doors, and part of the largest no kill community in the nation. The Shelter Veterinarian is a vital position to Austin Animal Center by maintaining the health and well-being of the animals housed at our facility. We are looking for a seasoned veterinarian who can contribute to the programs and services that support the shelter’s live outcome goal in accordance with No Kill philosophies.

What's the job? As a Shelter Veterinarian, you'll spend your days performing preventative care, triage services and general medical treatment of all animals in the center including rabies vaccination and spay/neuter eligible animals in compliance with state and local law and shelter policy. The Shelter Veterinarian will provide clinical supervision to staff veterinarians, veterinary services supervisors and animal health technicians. Your job will be busy, fast-paced, and rewarding!

What are the requirements?

  • Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Medical Doctor degree.

  • Five (5) years’ experience as a veterinarian, preferably in a Shelter environment.

  • Requires at least two (2) years of managerial and/or supervisory experience.

  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas.

  • DEA License for controlled substances

  • Demonstrated commitment to No Kill principles and philosophies including a drive to maximize lifesaving outcomes for all animals (including unborn animals, animals with bite histories, and community cats).

  • Demonstrated commitment to promote open adoptions and barrier-free pet ownership, expansive foster programs and provision of enrichment opportunities for all sheltered animals (including playgroups).

  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain positive, resilient workplace cultures.

  • Demonstrated success in forging and maintaining positive, productive and collaborative relationships with stakeholder groups (such as relevant professional organizations, rescues, and community advocates including volunteers).

  • Experience providing veterinary services in an open access No Kill shelter or high volume rescue organization providing live outcomes for over 95% of cats, dogs, and small animals.
