Job Description

I am a resident veterinarian looking for a veterinary assistant to help on a large Quarter Horse ranch.  This is a beautiful 2200 acre ranch located in central Texas, about 60 miles northwest of Fort Worth.  There are rolling hills and lots of grass and trees for those of you who may think only of sand and blowing tumbleweeds when you hear the word Texas.  The ranch is about 10 miles north of Weatherford which has a population of 25,000.

The ranch is home to 400-500 horses, depending on the time of year.  We have 130-145 foals each spring, most of which are embryo transfer foals.  The great majority of these are born January through mid-March making it very busy early in the year.  The foals are imprinted and halter broke within the first few days of life which makes that process easier and safer for both the foal and handler as opposed to halter breaking them as weanlings or yearlings.  We have a vaccination and worming schedule that is followed on the foals as well as the older horses.  A farrier comes weekly to keep the foot care of all the horses up to date.

Most surgeries are done at one of the clinics in nearby Weatherford.  However, with this many horses, there are always some needing treatments, wraps, etc. here at the ranch keeping us busy year-round. Some of your duties will include performing treatments twice daily, cleaning and wrapping wounds, worming and vaccinating foals as well as grown horses, pulling blood on grown horses, running plasma to new foals, and assisting the farrier. There is a night watchman who calls when a mare starts to foal.  You will be asked to be available some nights to help the nightman with foalings.  At all times, we will expect you to be vigilent in your observation of the horses so you can recognize something that needs to be given additional attention.

Cox Ranch does offer good health insurance.  After a year of employment, you are entitled to one week of paid vacation; after two years of employment, that increases to two weeks of paid vacation.  It takes a team to make this ranch as successful as it is.  We have a team oriented group that treats each other like family.  If you think you would like to be a part of this team, please submit your application through ihire.
