Job Description

Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospital in Durham, NC is seeking an experienced veterinary technician to join our 24-hour Emergency and Specialty practice as an ER Floor Lead.  The goal of the Floor Lead position is to help guide the daily activities of the medical support team and provide leadership under the direction of the Clinical Services Manager.  Strong technical and interpersonal skills are required, as is a positive attitude and a commitment to quality patient care and teamwork.


Summary of Position

The Floor Lead provides leadership to our team of emergency veterinary technicians and assistants while primarily engaged in providing excellent patient and client care.  As a representative of management, a Floor Lead must support the hospital mission, vision, goals and management decisions. Due to the nature of emergency medicine, flexibility is a must. Schedules will include evening and/or weekend hours. 


Core Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates advanced skills and knowledge as a veterinary technician/assistant and uses them in order to lead others in providing quality nursing care
  • Works with the clinicians to organize work flow during each shift
  • Monitors medical support staff performance and productivity and models positive behavior and effective clinical skills
  • Effectively communicates with medical support staff on shift regarding policies, standards, and performance and ensure employees are in compliance with hospital and department policies 
  • Participates in scheduled meetings and assists the Clinical Services Manager in ongoing in-house training
  • Assists the Clinical Services Manager in addressing staffing and scheduling issues
  • Identifies potential sources of conflict between staff members and seeks assistance in appropriate resolution
  • Identifies performance issues and works with the Clinical Services Manager to formulate performance improvement plans
  • Provides and complies staff feedback on medical support team performance to be utilized during annual reviews
  • Other related duties as assigned


  • Advanced skill level and ability to lead other technicians is required
  • Previous supervisory or lead experience is strongly preferred but not required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with clients, doctors, management, staff and clients
  • Strong organizational and time management skills as well as attention to detail
  • Ability to think objectively to solve problems and create solutions
