The Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Emory University, has an opening for a Veterinary Pathologist in the Division of Pathology. Minimum qualifications include a DVM or equivalent degree and ACVP board certification or eligibility. Prior experience with diseases and pathology of nonhuman primates is a highly desirable asset. Primary responsibilities include providing a diagnostic pathology service to the Center, both in support of the clinical care of the nonhuman primate colony and in support of a variety of ongoing research projects. The successful applicant will collaborate in the support of ongoing research. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in teaching laboratory animal and primate pathology as well as develop an externally funded research program within 3 years of hire. Salary is negotiable, based on the applicants' experience. The Yerkes Center maintains a colony of approximately 3,000 nonhuman primates which includes macaques, mangabey monkeys, squirrel monkeys, cebus monkeys and chimpanzees. A rodent vivarium is also located on site. JOB DESCRIPTION: The residency training program consists of 3 elements: residency training in laboratory animal clinical medicine and pathology (70%), course work in professional subjects and basic science (5%), and research experience (25%). The basic program is for two years with the initial appointment for one year renewable for a second year subject to satisfactory performance. The clinicopathologic component involves participation in the veterinary medical care of laboratory animals through clinical and pathology services of the School of Medicine and Yerkes National Primate Research Center. It includes weekend and holiday duty as scheduled. Residents provide services in animal health surveillance, veterinary medical care, procurement, quarantine and stabilization of all animals used in teaching and research, veterinary assistance with animal studies, consultation/assistance to faculty and students in the use and study of laboratory animals, necropsy examination, selection and processing of tissue specimens, interpretation of clinical and pathologic data, and the preparation of reports to investigators. Residents serve on the IACUC including review of protocols, evaluation of facilities and programs, and veterinary consultation. Research training guided by a faculty advisor trains the resident in the experimental method of problem solving: development of a scientific hypothesis, designing and planning experiments to test the hypothesis, data compilation and record keeping, analysis and interpretation of data and communication and publishing results. Residents participate in appropriate meetings, seminars, conferences and courses as a student and as a presenter or instructor. Teaching responsibilities are assigned after the first year. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: D.V.M. or equivalent degree from a college of veterinary medicine accredited by the A.V.M.A. License to practice in North America preferred.
