Description:
SAIC-Frederick, Inc.'s Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal-based research performed at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The LASP contributes to improving human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals. The Sr. Laboratory Animal Technician will be responsible for performing specialized tasks associated with the breeding, care, treatment and/or testing of laboratory animals in an animal facility. Duties include rodent breeding, colony management of complex strains and associated technical procedures such as tail clipping, ear punching, weaning and collection of routine diagnostic samples; record keeping, database maintenance and reporting. Specialized procedures include performing injections, blood collection, mouse dissections, tumor measurements, body weights, the use of dissecting scope, scales, hemacytometer, calipers, and balances . Work is checked periodically for application of proper techniques. Working hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. REQUIRED SKILLS: Any combination of education and progressively responsible technical experience which qualifies the candidate to sit for the LATG Certification Exam within 12 months of hire - or - Bachelors degree in Life Sciences or Veterinary Technology. Will encourage achievement of LATG Certification, however this is not a requirement. LAT certification preferred. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. In addition to the education requirement, experience is required in animal handling, rodent breeding colony management and associated procedures. Ability to perform a variety of technical procedures on laboratory animals (rodents), maintain experimental data, lift up to 50 lbs., train animal care and technical personnel and wear respiratory protection equipment if necessary. Experience performing injections (e.g. intraperitoneal and intravenous). Ability to keep computer records, maintaining/updating data in computer-based applications/databases, and prepare data for analysis and reporting. Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures for animal facilities, and the basic requirements for maintaining laboratory animals and performing scientific procedures involving animal testing and data collection. Description:
The Developmental Therapeutics Program's primary emphasis is on drug discovery and characterization, identification of new therapeutic molecular targets and participation in the evaluation of samples and results from animal models with a goal of identifying drugs with potential therapeutic value. Candidate will be responsible for sterile tissue culture related duties (e.g., routine cell culture, preparation of cells for injection into animals or into hollow fibers and, freezing cell stocks, etc.). Will assist in the hollow fiber assay by preparation of hollow fibers for injection into animals and following removal from animals, the multiple steps involved in cell viability determination. Will aide in the breeding of transgenic mice (i.e., mating, tracking the births and all the paperwork involved). Routine duties are performed independently and are subject to standard quality control checks. This is not a shower-in facility. REQUIRED SKILLS: Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with course work in a field related to biomedical research or four (4) years related experience in lieu of degree. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. No experience required with a Bachelors degree. Will need ability to perform sterile tissue culture techniques, multi-tasking and proficiency with Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Office. Good record keeping and organizational skills required. Requires knowledge of sterile technique. This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
