RESPONSIBILITIES: Supplies animals with clean food and water on a scheduled and as needed basis. This includes monitoring levels of special diets and informing Supervisor of the need to contact investigator. Changes animals on a scheduled and as needed basis from dirty housing to clean sanitized housing. Routine handling, restraint, identification and sexing of rodents, rabbits, ferrets, sheep, pigs, dogs, and non-human primates. Performs technical procedures under some supervision. Technical duties include toe nail and teeth clipping, ear notching and tagging, and tattooing. Operates and maintains cage washing equipment, laminar flow workbench, jet sprayer, chemical foamer, hydraulic lift and vacuum. Cleans and sanitizes floor, walls and sink areas of rooms on a regular basis. Sanitizes cages and pans using pretreatment chemicals. Removes waste from animal rooms and cage wash area on a daily basis. Monitors animals and reports to supervisor any deaths, signs of illness, or behavioral changes that may reflect a change in health status or a concern related to experimental design. Monitors and reports to Supervisor any deviation from regulations with respect to temperature, humidity, or air exchange. Transports new arrivals safely from receiving to the facility. Houses animals in accordance with prescribed guidelines and continually insures compliance by monitoring animal weights and adjusting rodent and rabbit housing as necessary. Collects packing slips, health reports and any other animal paperwork necessary for accurate recordkeeping. Reports any failure or decreased performance in equipment or any general maintenance problems in the facility. Properly euthanizes and/or disposes of dead animals and fills out death certificate for supervisor and investigator. Properly prepares carcasses for pick-up. Assists in keeping cage wash room, feed room, kitchen, and walk-in refrigerator clean on a daily basis. Informs Supervisor of any supply needs as inventory runs low. Assists in sanitizing automatic watering system bimonthly and changing filter monthly. Assists researchers with special requests such as extra caging equipment and restraining animals. Assists in keeping animal inventory by adding incoming animals, removing animals from census sheet in the event of a death and by adjusting number of animals/cage shown on cage card. Assists in weighing large animals for accurate drug dosing. Insures proper operation of Micro-Isolator barrier tops on rodent cages. Assists in keeping daily records of cagewasher temperature and informing supervisor of any deviation from regulations. Assists in operating a high vacuum steam sterilizer in support of murine immune compromised pathogen free rodent colonies. Works with isolation cubicles in a manner which maintains the integrity of individual cubicle airflow. Cares for animals with different health status, from VAF animals to those with risk of zoonotic infection. Awareness of federal, state, city and institutional regulations/guidelines, including the "Guide" and "Animal Welfare Act."
