Veterinarian
The most common profession in the veterinary field is clinical veterinary practice, which involves the treatment of animal diseases, disorders, and ailments, but there are other specialties candidates may choose to enter.  Clinical fields may be broken down into the treatment of domestic animal medicine, ratite medicine, livestock medicine, laboratory animal medicine, or equine medicine.  Other fields include research for human medicine, veterinary medicine, and pharmacology.  Veterinarians in these fields are highly trained, and must use the same amount of caution when performing major and minor operations.

Veterinary Technician/Assistant/Nurse
Veterinary technicians are employed to assist vets in all aspects of daily activities.  Professionals are responsible for preparing examination and clinical rooms, delivering basic treatments or inoculations, cleaning teeth, checking vital signs, doing blood tests, and administering anesthesia.  Veterinary assistants are not equipped with training or licensure, but are often utilized to perform similar duties as directed by veterinarians. 

Research/Study Technician
Specific duties for research or study technicians are vast, but they are primarily employed for assisting with a variety of tasks related to research projects.  They are often required to feed, water, and care for animals, in addition to observing and recording activities and behaviors of the animals while under their care.  Associates clean holding areas, dispose of bedding, manure, and animal carcasses following proper protocol.  Candidates will also be responsible for obtaining necessary specimen samples and administering vaccinations regularly. 

Office/General Manager
Responsible for the organization and document management of an entire veterinary facility, office or general managers are often highly skilled.  They handle the scheduling of surgical procedures, completion of complex forms, as well as a variety of financial responsibilities.  These associates have a great deal of interaction with vendors, suppliers, and customers or clients, and so they should possess excellent communication skills and knowledge in veterinary medicine.

Front Office Coordinator/Receptionist
Accountable for extensive clerical duties, veterinary receptionists are often the first contact customers have with a veterinary establishment, and therefore must have excellent interpersonal skills.  They handle all incoming phone calls, answer questions, direct calls appropriately, schedule appointments, inform doctors of patient arrival, and comfort customers when necessary.  It is also their responsibility to maintain records, prepare bills, and collect payments.

Groomer/Pet Stylist
Pet groomers are becoming more specialized as owners prefer more individualized care for their pets.  Groomers and stylists shampoo, clip, and groom cats and dogs, as well as also provide comfortable environments for the pets they care for.  Depending on the particular grooming establishment, services such as teeth cleaning, pedicures, or clothing for the animals may be offered.  Stylists schedule appointments and collect payments regularly and must be prepared to deal with unruly or threatened animals, exercising extreme care at all times.

Kennel Attendant
Responsible for numerous duties, kennel attendants have extensive interaction with animals.  They ensure facilities are clean and organized, as well as feed and move the animals when necessary.  These attendants return animals to their owners, provide excellent customer service, give those wishing to find a pet a tour of the facility, and assist with euthanizing animals.  Professionals are required to follow strict guidelines to ensure personal and public safety.

Veterinary Products Sales Representative
Veterinary sales representatives may be employed for the sale of a variety of veterinary supplies including bedding supplies, pharmaceuticals, specialized equipment, tools, furniture, etc.  Sales reps with experience in the veterinary field often excel in these occupations due to the knowledge the already possess of practices and procedures.  Veterinary sales careers may require travel, depending on the employing facility.
